A80 upgrade at Cumbernauld
19/12/2003
Proposals to upgrade the Mollinsburn
to Auchenkilns section of the A80 between Stepps and Haggs
have been published.
Transport Minister Nicol Stephen today
announced the publication of proposals to widen the section
of motorway between Mollinsburn and Auchenkilns to three
lanes with hard shoulders.
The draft road orders, published in
local newspapers, will also be displayed at exhibitions in
North Lanarkshire in January 2004 for public comment.
Mr Stephen said:
"The A80 is one of Scotland's major
transport corridors.
It is a vital link for commercial and
commuter traffic.
The work to upgrade the A80 between Stepps
and Haggs will help tackle congestion - improving journey
times from the north and across central Scotland.
"The publication of the draft road
orders and the public exhibitions will give local residents
and other interested parties the opportunity to look in
detail at the proposals for the new road."
The draft orders set out the proposed
line of the road. Anyone can object or make representations
to the order proposals. In some circumstances, if
objections cannot be resolved, Ministers may decide to hold
a Public Local Inquiry.
The draft orders will be placed on
display for public comment from December 19 2003 until 18
February 2004 at the following offices:
Scottish Executive
Victoria Quay
Edinburgh
North Lanarkshire Council
Fleming House
Tryst Road
Cumbernauld Library
8 Allander Walk
Cumbernauld
The public exhibitions will be held at
the Condorrat Social Club, 9 Main Road, Condorrat, North
Lanarkshire on:
Monday January 12,
2004 between 1100 and 2030 hours
Tuesday January 13,
2004 between 0930 and 2030 hours
Wednesday January 14, 2004,
between 0930 and 1700 hours
This is first of three planned phases
to upgrade the busy A80 trunk road between Stepps and Haggs
to motorway standard.
The proposals for the remaining two sections
Auchenkilns to Haggs and Moodiesburn Bypass will follow in
the spring of 2004.
The proposed new motorway will widen
the section between Mollinsburn and Auchenkilns to three
lanes with hard shoulders, upgrade the existing two lanes
between Auchenkilns and Haggs including the provision of
hard shoulders and provide a new two lane bypass of
Moodiesburn.
In advance of the upgrade a £22
million contract to replace the existing Auchenkilns
roundabout has already been awarded.
This is one of the major congestion points
in the Central Scotland trunk road network and construction
work will begin in January 2004.
