National dishes of Scotland
01/12/2003
The results of a survey of 6,000 people identifying
Scotland's national dishes were announced today.
Minister for Environment and Rural Development Ross
Finnie raised a toast to the ten foods nominated at a lunch
organised by the Food Trust of Scotland.
The survey winners were Scotch broth, smoked salmon,
haggis and neeps, Aberdeen Angus steak, lamb, venison,
baked salmon, Tayside raspberries, clootie dumpling and
farmhouse cheeses.
Mr Finnie said:
"Scotland's produce enjoys an international reputation
for quality. The results of this survey confirm that that
reputation is deserved.
"For every dish identified there are others equally
deserving. A list of Scotland's top foods could also have
included Cullen skink, Arbroath smokies, west coast
scallops, langoustines, herring and Ayrshire potatoes.
"The Scottish Executive is committed to improving the
links between our producers and consumers, here and
overseas. We are working closely with the industry to raise
standards, retain more of the value associated with
processing, improve marketing and make Scottish produce
more widely available through our supermarkets.
"Food in Scotland is a success story and spreading the
word about its quality is one the most enjoyable aspects of
my role as Minister. I congratulate the Food Trust for
undertaking this work and underlining the range and quality
of Scottish dishes."
