Glasgow and Clyde Valley

24/11/2003

Deputy Communities Minister Mary Mulligan today issued the decision to approve, without modifications, the First Alteration to the Glasgow and the Clyde Valley Structure Plan.

The Alteration, together with the approved structure plan, paves the way for the development of a new town centre at Ravenscraig.

Ms Mulligan said:

"This Executive is committed to working in partnership with local authorities to regenerate Scotland's urban communities.

"The amount of retailing supported in this Alteration will result in overall improvements to the quality of shopping in this part of North Lanarkshire. A new town centre will also act as a catalyst for the regeneration of Ravenscraig as well as the wider area, bringing benefits for the whole community.

"The Alteration links the development of a new town centre to the restructuring of Motherwell and Wishaw town centres, as supported by North Lanarkshire Council."

The Alteration has been prepared by the Glasgow and the Clyde Valley Structure Plan Joint Committee, which represents East Dunbartonshire, East Renfrewshire, Glasgow, Inverclyde, North Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire, South Lanarkshire and West Dunbartonshire Councils, and was submitted for approval following public consultation.

The decision will be advertised, followed by a six week period for legal challenge. The decision letter and comments on objections and representations not accepted by the Scottish Ministers will be available for inspection at Council offices.
