Minister comments on 2003 exam results statistics

04/11/2003

SQA Examination Results in Scottish Schools 2002/03 are published today and report on cumulative attainment in Scottish Qualifications Authority exams at both national and local authority levels, pre-appeals.

Commenting on the results, Education Minister Peter Peacock said:

"AcrossScotland, pupils and teachers worked hard to gain good grades in this year's exams and these statistics show what they achieved. I applaud all the hard work of teachers, pupils and parents in helping our young people gain the qualifications they need.

"While exam results are obviously important, they're only one way of judging school performance.

"Next month, we'll unveil new arrangements for publishing school-by-school exam results using a website to give parents better information on school performance and recognising the wider achievements of schools, teachers and pupils."

The exam results for 2003 are pre appeal. Around March there will be a detailed analysis of the post appeal exam results.

The Statistics Publication Notice includes a breakdown by local authority area.

The new arrangements for the publication of school level exam results were announced on October 24, in response to a parliamentary question. The full text of the Parliamentary Question is available on the Scottish Parliament website.
