Malaysian base for Glasgow firm

Enterprise Minister Jim Wallace today joinedMalaysia's political leaders and a Scottish software company as a multi-million dollar deal was signed at the Prime Minister's office inKuala Lumpur.

The agreement will seeGlasgow-based Picsel Technologies Ltd setting up their Asia Pacific HQ inMalaysia.

It was described by Mr Wallace as a 'brilliant example of what can be achieved by an innovative Scottish company with global ambitions'.

Today's signing ceremony concludes an incentive package from the Malaysian Government to have Picsel set up in that country.

The mobile multimedia software provider currently employs around 70 people inScotlandand plans tostrengthen its sales and marketing and engineering functions at its global HQ inGlasgow, as well as opening new offices inEdinburgh.

Picsel Technologies founders, Imran Khand and Dr Majid Anwar joined the outgoing Malaysian Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and the country's Minister for Energy, Communications and ulti-Media, Leo Moggie, the British Deputy High Commissioner, Mark Canning and Mr Wallace at the signing ceremony today .

Mr Wallace said:

"During the last week I have spent time inJapanandSingaporeand have seen for myself the diversity and dynamism of the opportunities for Scottish companies to work with partners in the region.

"The successful conclusion of this deal is a realhigh pointon which to end my visit.It is a brilliant example of what can be achieved by an innovative Scottish company with global ambitions.

"For a long time the focus of Ministerial visits to this part of the world was to try and persuade companies from theFar Eastto invest inScotland. I take enormous encouragement and satisfaction from seeing the roles reversed here today and I hope we can see a lot more of this in the future.

Our objective is to develop lasting relationships with international partners and this announcement is an excellent example of this strategy in action. Picsel is a companyScotlandcan be proud of. It is clear that this is the perfect time for Picsel to expand its presence in the Asia Pacific region, and I am absolutely delighted that the Malaysian government has recognised Picsel as a global market leader for the world's mobile technology market.

"I wish this partnership every success, and hope there will be many more excellent opportunities in the future for our two countries to do business together".

Picsel's chief executive Imran Khand said:

Picsel is currently promoting its products inChinaandJapanwith the support of Scottish Development International.

Three multi multimillion dollar deals have been secured recently with China Unicom,China's leading network operator; TCL Holdings,China's largest manufacturer of mobile phones; and Lenovo (Legend Holdings),China's leading electronics brand. These deals will lead to Picsel Powered solutions being used on each of the company's forthcoming Smart Phone and PDA product ranges to be released early next year.

Picsel's ePAGE™ technology won the Grand Prize from the European Information Society against competition from 18 other European countries. The event was organised by the European council of Applied Sciences and Engineering with backing from the European Commission
