Sport Minister Frank McAveety said today that the provision of multi-leisure facilities targeted at young people is essential to increasing participation levels in physical activity and helps tackle youth crime.

The Minister said that by developing local services like this for young people together with the national initiatives that are underway, provides us with a great opportunity to improve the quality of life inScotland's communities.

At the opening of the new "Zones" centre in Alloa Mr McAveetysaid:

"The facilities here will also offer a place to play music, dance, play football and basketball, or even use computers for research or homework.

"These activities are essential to the general well-being ofScotland, and centres like this will encourage our children to participate in healthy, positive activities and move away from trouble on the street.

"I'm delighted to unveil an essential addition to the local community, which I believe will make a genuine difference in our fight against inactivity and provide a safer, stronger community".

After consultation with Police, youth workers, sports development and youngsters Clackmannashire Leisure decided to create a Youth Leisure Centrespecifically for the under 18's.
