Transatlantic university link for business
10/10/2003
The Edinburgh-Stanford Link - a
collaboration between the two Universities and Scottish
Enterprise - was launched today.
The launch showcased cutting edge
projects that have the potential to become marketable
products to Scottish and US businesses.
Projects that have been developed by
the Link - a collaboration between Edinburgh and Stanford
Universities and Scottish Enterprise - include a Smart home
containing 'hearing' lights that switch themselves off when
told to do so and a robotic helicopter. (see Notes to
Editors)
Mr Wallace said:
"We invested £5.3 million, through
Scottish Enterprise, to this Edinburgh-Link early last
year, and are committed to supporting this special five
year collaboration. I'm proud of what the project has
achieved to date - innovative and exciting projects that
could ultimately become marketable products for everyday
living.
"It is an excellent example of
what Smart Successful Scotland, our long
term economic strategy, is all about - that is making the
most of our strengths and ensuring Scotland benefits from
its people's talent, knowledge and skills.
"The Link also recognises the
importance of scientists working with industry at the
earliest possible stage of their research, and I'm pleased
to see this relationship developed today. We want Scottish
business to benefit from links with
Scotland's universities, and vice versa
"Today's groundbreaking event
demonstrates the work of top researchers from Edinburgh and
Stanford Universities who have developed cutting edge
technology in speech and language technology. Scottish
Enterprise provides the expertise and advice to help ensure
that products have the potential for
commercialisation."
Market research into recent trends in
language technology has identified that the global market
is anticipated
to grow by 38 per cent per year until
2007.
