The MTV Europe Music Video Awards,
which are due to be held in Edinburgh later this year, will
be hosted by Christina Aguilera, and acts will include
Kylie Minogue, Byonce Knowles and Travis.
Speaking at a ceremony in London to
announce the host and nominees for the awards, First
Minister Jack McConnell said that Scotland is the place to
be, now and in the future.
The event also marked the beginning of
'The Road To Edinburgh' - a series of concerts across
Britain that will culminate in the awards themselves on
November 6.
Jack McConnell said:
"The MTV awards are a huge coup for
Scotland and a massive opportunity to show the world what
we can do. This event will be a showcase for our country
and a showcase for our talent.
"The eyes of the world will be on
Edinburgh and Scotland and I want to make sure that we are
seen at our very best. I want people to visit our exciting
cities and see our breathtaking scenery. I want them to see
and hear our world class musical talent and I want them to
see that Scotland is a place that can host the most
spectacular events.
But most of all, I want even more people
from all over the world to see that the best parties take
place in Scotland.
"MTV have shown faith in Scotland by
choosing to celebrate their tenth anniversary awards here
with us. I'm sure that it will be an amazing night."
A simultaneous event was held in
Edinburgh. Speaking at that event, Minister for Tourism,
Culture and Sport Frank McAveety said:
"The MTV Europe Awards will provide a fantastic
spectacle for a world-wide television audience. It will
attract the key players in the music industry, which will
provide opportunities to highlightScotland's many talented musicians.
"With an expected TV audience of 1 billion viewers,
this will be an important platform to showcaseScotlandas a preferred tourism destination."
