Detailed statistics of the sea fisheries sector
were published today to supplement the headline
statistics of sea fish landings released on March 10, 2003.
This annual publication provides additional detail
about volume and value of each species caught, landings
into ports inScotlandand the characteristics of the Scottish fishing
fleet.
The main points are as follows:
Total persons employed in the fish
catching sector inScotlandfell from 6,637 persons at the end of
2001 to 5,707 persons at the end of
2002
The value of sea fish landings by
Scottish based vessels fell by 4 per cent
to £328 million last year. By volume,
landings by Scottish based vessels fell by
9 per cent to 446,000 tonnes
Scottish-based vessels landed 65 per cent
by weight and 60 per cent by value of all
landings byUKvessels last year
Landings intoScotlandbyUKand foreign vessels rose 8 per cent to
378,000 tonnes due to an increase in landings
of pelagic species into Scottish
ports
Approximately 70 per cent of the total
volume of sea fish landed into theUKin 2002 was landed into a Scottish
port
These statistics are produced from
the Executive's Environment and Rural Affairs Department's
data base which records details of sea fish landings into
Scotland, and landings abroad by Scottish based vessels.
The statistics are supplemented by information from the
Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs for
landings into the rest of the UK.
