Island shelter on the map

11/09/2003

Minister for Culture Frank McAveety today congratulated Tiree's 'An Turas' building project team on making it to the final of the UK's most prestigious award for architecture.

The ferry shelter on Tiree has been shortlisted for the RIBA Stirling Prize, which will be awarded to the building which has made the greatest contribution to British architecture in the past year.

'An Turas', which has already won both the RIBA Award 2003 and the Royal Scottish Academy Gold Medal for Architecture 2003, was designed to create a unified work both physically and conceptually to connect with the landscape of Tiree.

Mr McAveety said:

"I am delighted that An Turas shelter on Tiree has made the shortlist for the prestigious Stirling Prize for Architecture. The building is a wonderfully imaginative example of how art, architecture and landscape can be combined to reflect the spirit of a place.

"My congratulations go to Tiree Arts Enterprise who commissioned the project, architects Sutherland Hussey, artists Jake Harvey, Sandra Kennedy, Glen Onwin and Donald Urquhart on their achievement of reaching the shortlist."

An Turas was a Scottish Arts Council funded project for architect, artist and engineer to collaborate in making a structure for the island of Tiree.

An Turas is a shelter with views of the bay which also works as a sculptural form in the landscape and which explores the sensory experience of views and shelter.

The RIBA Stirling Prize is the UK's most prestigious architectural prize and is awarded annually to the architects of the building which has made the greatest contribution to British architecture in the past year. Winners must be RIBA Members and the building may be anywhere in the European Union. The prize is named after the architect Sir James Stirling 1926 - 1992. The winner will receive £20,000.

This is the eighth year the RIBA Stirling Prize has been presented. Previous winners include the NatWest Media Centre at Lord's Cricket Ground, and the Gateshead Millennium Bridge.

This year's winner will be announced in Bristol's science centre on Sunday October 12.
