Extra cash for safer streets

11/09/2003

Local authorities are to receive an additional £16.85 million over two years for cycling, walking and safer streets projects.

The extra funding, allocated from last year's Other Public Transport budget, is intended to enable councils to further develop and introduce a wide variety of projects for cyclists and pedestrians in their area, including:

  • cycle lanes and pedestrian footpaths
  • installation of pedestrian and cyclists' crossings
  • traffic-free entrances to schools and the provision of secure cycle storage and locker facilities at schools and elsewhere

Announcing the extra resources at the Scottish Parliament's cross party group on cycling, Transport Minister Nicol Stephen said:

"The Executive has awarded Councils nearly £21 million since 2000 for projects to promote cycling and walking and to improve the safety of routes to schools.

"The additional funds I have announced today will extend those benefits and help local authorities to make our streets safer through measures such as cycle lanes, pedestrian footpaths and safer routes to schools.

"Many innovative cycling and walking projects have been developed as a result of this funding. The funds announced today will support significant new improvements. These projects can greatly benefit local communities and make it easier for children and local people to walk and cycle as an enjoyable and healthy way to travel.

"The Executive is committed to cutting the number of deaths and injuries on our roads and has set a target to halve the number of children killed and seriously injured by 2010.

"We are on target to achieve this, with a 38 percent drop in 2002 in the number of children killed or seriously injured compared to the mid-1990s level. Today's announcement will lead to safer schemes for walking and cycling, helping us to meet our target."

The additional funding levels will be £8.2 million in 2004-05 and £8.65 million in 2005-06, representing an uprate of the £8 million allocation in 2003-04.
