National Galleries Trustees

10/09/2003

Culture Minister Frank McAveety today announced the appointment of two new Members to the Board of Trustees of the National Galleries of Scotland.

Mr Gordon Mackie and Mr James Dawnay will serve for four years until July 31, 2007. The posts are part time and are not remunerated.

The Trustees of the National Galleries of Scotland have a statutory duty to care for, preserve and develop existing collections and to make them available to the general public and for research.

The National Galleries, a Non-Departmental Public Body (NDPB), receive annual funding of £10 million from the Executive.

Mr McAveety said:

"The new Trustees will bring their considerable experience to the Board of the National Galleries of Scotland, a major Scottish cultural public body.

"The Trustees have a crucial role in determining the policies and priorities for the National Galleries, in overseeing the operation of the Galleries, and in ensuring good value for money for public funds.

"I look forward to working with the new Trustees, and the Chair and Board of the National Galleries of Scotland, in pursuing Scottish Ministers' aims of promoting participation and excellence in the cultural field."

James Dawnay is a member of the National Trust and The National Trust for Scotland. He has been a Director of London's oldest established fine art consultancy, Gurr Johns, since 2000 and holds Chairmanships and Directorships with various Trusts in the fields of arts and architecture, museums and finance. He is also a Director of a number of Investment Trust companies. Mr Dawnay declared no political activities within the last five years and holds no other Ministerial appointment.

Gordon Mackie has been the Principal Teacher of Art and Design at Buckie High School since 1990. He is a past chairman of Buckie Community Area Management Committee and is currently a member of the Scottish Network for Art and Design Education (SNADE). He graduated in 1976 from Glasgow School of Art and has exhibited at the Scottish Society of Artists (SSA) and Royal Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts (RGI) showing landscapes of the North East Coast of Scotland. He is presently preparing for a large solo exhibition in Elgin later this year. Mr Mackie declared no political activities in the last five years and holds no other Ministerial appointment.

The appointments were made in accordance with the Code of Practice issued by the Office of the Commissioner of Public Appointments (OCPA). A statement of validation from the Independent Assessor appointed by OCPA has been obtained. This confirms full compliance with the OCPA Code of Practice at each stage of the appointments process.

The National Galleries Board is appointed by, and accountable to, Scottish Ministers. It consists of 12 members including the Chair.
