Trunk road maintenance audit
03/09/2003
The second annual report on the performance of
Scotland's trunk road maintenance companies was published
today by the independent Performance Audit Group (PAG)
responsible for monitoring and auditing the services
provided by BEAR Scotland Limited and Amey Highways.
The report concludes that the operating companies
continued to improve on their performance in the first year
but that both still fell short of meeting all their
contractual requirements.
Shortfalls included litter collection, weed control and
ongoing issues with Information Technology systems.
It also outlines remedial action where shortcomings were
identified and confirms that the operating companies have
either carried out this work or are doing so following
instruction from the Executive.
Transport Minister Nicol Stephen said:
"Scotland's trunk roads are an essential part of our
transport network and road users need to be confident that
a high standard of maintenance and repair is provided
throughout the year.
"Today's report is generally positive
on the performance of the operating companies. The
independent audit we've put in place to examine the trunk
road contract means we can make sure each company delivers
the highest possible standards of work while ensuring value
for money.
"This detailed report makes it clear
that the companies are working to address their shortfalls
to ensure the expected standard of service for road
users."
Scotland's trunk road and motorway network is split into
four units. BEAR Scotland Limited operates on the North
West and North East Units and Amey Highways Limited
operates on the South West and South East Units.
PAG is a consortium led by the Halcrow Group Limited in
association with PricewaterhouseCoopers and Scott Wilson
(Scotland).
