Encouragement for public transport
25/08/2003
Scottish transport statistics published today show an
increase in the use of public transport and a continuing
increase in road traffic.
Transport Minister Nicol Stephen said new investment in
public transport was the key to tackling road
congestion.
Mr Stephen said:
"These figures show that more and more people are using
public transport. The bus travel figures are particularly
good news. We now have the third successive year of
increased passenger numbers, after decades of decline.
Train passengers are also up 3% compared to 10 years ago -
despite the significant problems on our railways last
year.
"It is crucial to offer a better deal for Scotland's
passengers. That is why we are shifting the focus of new
investment towards public transport. Higher quality, more
reliable bus and rail services are crucial. That is why we
are increasing investment in public transport by 70% over
the next three years.
"The 17% increase in the amount of freight carried by
rail is also very encouraging. Our commitment to support
new schemes like the re-opening of the freight rail link
from Stirling to Alloa and Kincardine should continue this
growth.
"The road traffic figures show the real challenge of
tackling congestion and underline the importance of
encouraging those who have the choice to make the shift
towards public transport. More cars on our roads are not
good for business, not good for the environment and is a
slow road to nowhere."
