New appointment to Agricultural Wages Board

Mr John Menzies has been appointed as a new independent member to the Scottish Agricultural Wages Board (SAWB), it was announced today. Mr Menzies' appointment will run from 1 September 2003 until 31 August 2006.

The post is part-time and currently attracts a daily fee of £150.68 for attendance at Board meetings and a discretionary payment of £43.05 for preparatory work undertaken before Board meetings. The time commitment is approximately 2 to 4 days per annum.

Mr Menzies recently retired from the post of Managing Director of the Power Systems Division of Scottish Power. He is currently employed part time as a Business Advisor to two companies, AMT-Sybex, a UK Information Technology implementation company and Alfred McAlpine Utility Services, a utility installation and construction company. Mr Menzies holds no other Ministerial appointments and declared no political activity during the past 5 years.

The Scottish Agricultural Wages Board is an autonomous body established under the provisions of the Agricultural Wages (Scotland) Act 1949 and has responsibility for determining minimum rates of pay, holiday entitlement and certain other conditions of employment for workers employed in agriculture in Scotland.

This Ministerial Public Appointment has been made in accordance with the Code of Practice issued by the Office of the Commissioner for Public Appointments. An Independent Assessor was involved in the selection process.

The Scottish Agricultural Wages Board comprises 17 members, six representing the interests of employers nominated by the NFU Scotland and the Scottish Landowners' Federation, six representing the interests of workers nominated by the T & G Scotland and five independent members appointed by Scottish Ministers, one of whom is designated Chairman.
