Halt sign for car litter louts

11/08/2003

Motorists are being urged to take their litter home and stop rubbishing Scotland's reputation.

Ross Finnie, Minister for the Environment, today launched Keep Scotland Beautiful's (KSB) anti-roadside litter poster campaign aimed at encouraging people not to throw litter from their vehicles.

Speaking at the formal opening of KSB's new office in Stirling, Mr Finnie said:

"Litter is a blight on our country. Roadside litter in particular gives a bad impression of Scotland to the thousands of visitors to these shores every year.

"Throwing any object from a moving vehicle can also be dangerous to other road users and could cause accidents. People should consider the damage they are doing to Scotland's environment and image before carelessly and thoughtlessly tossing rubbish out of their car.

"The Executive wants to see a cleaner, greener Scotland. Our message is clear - take your rubbish home and bin it !"

The Executive, which provides annual core funding of £234,000 for KSB, also gave an additional £550,000 pounds out of its EYF funding for anti-litter initiatives. £360,000 of this funding is being spent on this latest campaign.
