Brucellosis compensation level
01/08/2003
The maximum compensation payable during August for an
animal slaughtered and valued for compensation because it
is affected with brucellosis, or is a reactor when tested
for the disease, will be £675, it was announced today.
The figure has been calculated in accordance with the
Brucellosis and Tuberculosis Compensation (Scotland) Order
1978, and is based on figure returns from sample markets
across Britain showing sales of commercial grade Fresian
cows and heifers in milk and in calf.
The maximum compensation for an animal affected with
Brucellosis, or for an animal which is a reactor, is
calculated to be an amount equal to 75% of its market
value, or £900. The figure of £900 is 125% of the average
price for the month occurring two months prior to the one
in which the market value of the animal was determined.
There is no limit on the compensation paid for cattle
slaughtered because they have been in contact with affected
animals or reactors.
The number of animals, average price and compensation
limit announced in this notice will also apply to cattle
valued for slaughter in England and Wales during the same
month.
An amendment to the Brucellosis and Tuberculosis
(Compensation) (Scotland) Order 1978 came into effect on 4
September 1998. From that date farmers will be compensated
the full market value for animals which are slaughtered
because they are affected with TB.
