Executive electricity contract awarded

01/08/2003

Scottish and Southern Energy plc has been awarded the contract to supply electricity to the Scottish Executive and its collaborative Partners, it was announced today.

The contract, which covers the period from 1 August 2003 until 31 July 2005 with an option to extend for a further year, has an annual value estimated to be in the region of £6 million.

Deputy Minister for Finance and Public Services Tavish Scott said:

"This is good news. This contract not only represents value for money for the taxpayer but also makes a significant contribution to meeting the Executive's environmental targets. It represents a collaboration amongst 34 Public Sector Organisations, and includes over 770 sites across Scotland.

"SSE demonstrated a comprehensive Renewable Energy Production Strategy to provide all Scottish Executive electricity from renewable sources. Some 80 per cent will be generated from small scale hydro-electric plants and/or wind and wave generation with the balance coming from larger scale hydro-electric power stations.

"The award of this contract underlines our commitment to the development of Scotland's unrivalled potential for the production of energy from natural sources as a contribution to our efforts to tackle climate change."

The contract was awarded following open competition in accordance with European Union/World Trade Organisation rules. SSE submitted the most economically advantageous tender and fully satisfied our objective of promoting renewables and combating climate change.
