Golden Jubilee Hospital beats targets
04/07/2003
The Golden Jubilee National Hospital at Clydebank has
exceeded the target set for its first year as an NHS
hospital.
It was set the challenge to double to 5,000 the number
of procedures it carried out in its last year in private
ownership. It has almost quadrupled that number, treating
9,292 patients.
Health Minister Malcolm Chisholm said:
"This is a magnificent achievement for NHSScotland. The
target we set for the hospital was challenging but the
response of the workforce has been truly outstanding. I pay
tribute to everyone at the Golden Jubilee.
"But this isn't a numbers game. It is about patients.
What the staff have delivered is a huge contribution to
improving the lives of thousands of people from all over
Scotland who otherwise faced the prospect of lengthy waits
for operations.
"It is also about quality of care. From talking to
patients I know that the care, treatment and facilities at
Clydebank are very highly regarded and much
appreciated.
"There is much to celebrate on the hospital's first
birthday in the NHS and now we want it go from strength to
strength. Proposals are well advanced to open two state of
the art orthopaedic theatres and I will shortly be
discussing with the Hospital plans for further
expansion.
"The Golden Jubilee has made an excellent start since
joining NHSScotland and I am sure will contribute even more
in the future."
Since it was purchased by NHSScotland at the end of June
2002 for £37.5 million, the hospital has:
- carried out 9,292 procedures. These comprise 5,020
medical and surgical procedures (ranging from endoscopy
to complex heart and orthopaedic surgery) and 4,272
scanning procedures (mostly MRI, CT, and ultrasound
investigations)
- increased its workforce from 250 to 370, including
more than 40 clinical/nursing nursing staff
- increased average daily bed occupancy from 33 beds
prior to takeover to 65 beds with a current capacity of
72 beds
Ian McAdam, Chief Executive of the Hospital, said:
"I am absolutely delighted with our performance. It
underlines what an important contribution this Hospital has
made in helping to reduce waiting times in Scotland and
just how significant a role it will continue to play in the
future.
"The past year has been a huge challenge for the staff
at the Hospital. Making the transition to the NHS has not
been easy but with hard work, a flexible approach and a
determination to make a difference these highly
satisfactory results have been achieved. The staff have
every reason to be proud of their performance - as I am of
them."
NHS patients from Shetland to the Borders have been
treated at the hospital. Procedures performed include
cardiac surgery, cardiology, orthopaedics, general surgery,
ENT (ear, nose and throat) and ophthalmology. The Hospital
has also expanded endoscopy and dermatology clinics.
The Golden Jubilee now provides work for 453 people,
including those employed at the associated hotel on the
site. It is one of the largest employers in Clydebank and
makes a significant contribution to the local economy.
Of the 9,292 patients treated in the last 12 months,
some 78% (7,268) were from NHSScotland.
The remainder were NHS cardiac patients from Northern
Ireland and England, and private and overseas patients. The
number of private patients treated fell to 1,737 - the vast
majority of which (1,163) were for scans.
