National Museums look to the future

03/07/2003

The strategic framework which sets the overall direction of the National Museums of Scotland for the next four years was launched tonight.

The aims of the NMS corporate plan for 2003-2007, which echo the Executive's National Cultural Strategy commitments of increasing accessibility and participation in Scotland's cultural life, are designed to allow people the opportunity to understand and enjoy Scotland's heritage.

At the Museum of Scotland, Culture Minister Frank McAveety said:

"The Executive recognises the valuable work already carried out by the National Museums of Scotland, and congratulates them on producing a clear and exciting plan for the future.

"The National Museums will play a key role in shaping the future of the sector, a future which will ensure increased accessibility and understanding of Scotland's heritage both here and abroad.

"It's vital that people visiting our museums find it informative and enjoyable, and that we make the experience available to all.

"I believe that the National Museums plan will enable the organisation to deliver improved services and continue to be recognised as world class institution which appeals to everyone.

"Both myself, colleagues at the Executive, and partners across the cultural sector share their vision, and are committed to ensuring that we all contribute to the national agendas for inclusion, learning and excellence."

In 2002 the Executive announced a consultation to inform the development of an Action Plan for Museums in Scotland.

The aim was to create a new strategic framework of funding and other support, which can enable museums in Scotland to fully exploit the potential of their collections for education and enjoyment.

In its response NMS has proposed a more clearly defined national role for itself as a source of advice and expertise, and also as a key player in the creation of strategic partnerships.

National Museums of Scotland includes the Museum of Scotland and Royal Museum in Chambers Street, Edinburgh; the National War Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh Castle; the Museum of Flight, at East Fortune; the Museum of Scottish Country Life at Kittochside, (operated in partnership with the National Trust for Scotland); Shambellie House Museum of Costume and the Piping Museum at the National Piping Centre.
