Ayrshire shows 'positive role' for young people
03/07/2003
Deputy First Minister Jim Wallace today praised the
contribution of young people after visiting the Ayr North
Social Inclusion Partnership (SIP) and going on to the
Westoak flats in the Dalmilling area.
BBC TV's 'The Beechgrove Garden' has recently completed
a makeover on the flats, alongside young people from the
area, their parents, and South Ayrshire Council.
The programme will be broadcast tonight at 20.30 on
BBC2.
Local young people have also been involved in
SIP-sponsored arts programme, making murals, mosaics, and
artworks to improve their living environment.
Mr Wallace said:
"Last week we launched a consultation on our anti-social
behaviour strategy. In doing that however, we rightly
acknowledged that most young people play a very positive
role in Scottish society.
"Over the past four years, the Executive have invested a
great deal in regenerating and strengthening Scotland's
communities. The work done here is a credit to these young
people and their community.
"It is the sort of positive contribution shown here that
strengthens our resolve to tackle those instances of
anti-social behaviour which are committed by a minority in
our society.
"Action on anti-social behaviour will ensure that people
across Scotland can live in communities that are safe and
well looked after. Without it the quality of life of too
many people in communities across Scotland will be
blighted."
