New Registrar General appointed

27/06/2003

Duncan Macniven, currently Head of Corporate Services at the Forestry Commission, has been appointed as the new Registrar General for Scotland.

He will replace John Randall who is retiring.

Mr Macniven studied history at Aberdeen University and held a number of senior Scottish Office posts in Health, Historic Scotland and Justice before being appointed as a Forestry Commissioner in 1999.

Of the retiral of John Randall, Justice Minister Cathy Jamieson said:

"I want to thank John Randall for his dedication to the work of the General Register Office over the last four years. In that time he has overseen a number of important developments and initiatives that have helped us map the population and lives of Scotland today - including the 2001 census. I wish him well in his retirement."

The statutory post of Registrar General for Scotland heads the General Register Office for Scotland (GROS).

It is responsible for registering events like births, deaths, marriages, divorces and adoptions. It has responsibility for the conduct of civil marriage, for the census of Scotland's population every 10 years, and for other statistics about Scotland's people.
