A90 improvements on Forfar bypass
09/06/2003
The completion of major road improvements at the Glamis
and Kirriemuir junctions along the A90's Forfar Bypass is
expected to significantly improve road safety.
The £4.8 million upgrade has involved the construction
of an underpass at the Glamis junction and an over-bridge
at the Kirriemuir junction, both located on the Forfar
Bypass in Angus.
Transport Minister Nicol Stephen said:
"These are important improvements that will be welcomed
by everyone who uses this road. This major investment in
road safety will particularly benefit Forfar and the
surrounding communities. They are a much needed investment
in road safety.
"I am pleased these improvements are now completed and
hope the work will lead to a better travelling experience
for people who use this important road.
"There were a number of tragic accidents at these
junctions over recent years. There is no doubt that
upgrading junctions to full interchanges was the best and
safest option.
"The local community and regular road users have
welcomed the upgrades, which mark a major step forward in
the overall improvement of the A90 Dundee to Aberdeen trunk
road. As a regular user of the road, I know how vital these
improvements are, and I am delighted today to officially
open the new junctions.
"These are part of a wider package of investment which
will see at least 15 new improvement schemes along the A90.
The projects represent an investment of about £24 million
on the A90 route between Dundee and Perth and nearly £18
million on the road to Aberdeen.
"I am determined to deliver a safer more efficient
transport stystem in Scotland and these improvements make a
significant contribution to that aim."
RJ McLeod Limited was awarded the contract to complete
the Glamis and Kirriemuir junction improvements, with
construction beginning in August 2002 and completed last
month.
Funding for the £40 million improvements on the A90 came
from the Transport Group Budget in last year's Scottish
Budget. In total, we are investing nearly £1 billion a year
until 2006 in transport. About £300 million of this funding
has been devoted to infrastructure improvements per year,
providing at least £3 billion over the next 10 years to
transform Scotland's transport infrastructure.
