Junior Road Safety Officers
17/03/2003
A new website to support Junior Road Safety Officers
(JRSOs) in schools across Scotland is launched today.
The site provides general information, fun activities
and competitions as well as details about joining the
scheme. There is also a members-only section for
participating schools.
It aims to get Primary 6 and 7 children directly
involved in road safety issues by giving them a range of
duties within the school such as maintaining a noticeboard,
talking at assemblies and running competitions.
Deputy Transport Minister Lewis Macdonald said:
"I am delighted to see the Junior Road Safety Officers'
scheme go on-line. This provides another opportunity for
children to learn about road safety whilst developing IT
skills.
"I launched the JRSO scheme last September to encourage
more interest in road safety and help children use the
roads more safely. The Executive is committed to reducing
fatal and serious road casualties by 40 per cent by 2010
and the Scottish Road Safety Campaign, funded by the
Executive runs campaigns and publicity messages across
Scotland to promote road safety."
Deputy Minister for Education and Young People Nicol
Stephen said:
"It is vital that all children understand the importance
of road safety and we are keen to reinforce this message
using modern, interactive technology.
"This road safety website will also help develop the
citizenship and leadership skills of Junior Road Safety
Officers who can use it to promote responsible road safety
awareness to other pupils."
The JRSO scheme has been developed by the Scottish Road
Safety Campaign (SRSC) in partnership with Standard
Life.
The website is funded by the SRSC, which is funded by
the Executive.
