Algerians charged under Terrorism Act released on bail
14/03/2003
The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service and
Lothian and Borders Police today confirmed that the 9
Algerians charged under the Terrorism Act 2000 were to be
released on bail, pending further investigation.
A spokesperson said:
"Nine Algerian nationals were arrested by Lothian and
Borders Police in December 2002, and charged with offences
in contravention of Section 57 of the Terrorism Act 2000.
"A team of Lothian and Borders police officers, under
the direction of the Edinburgh Procurator Fiscal, has
subsequently carried out extensive enquiries, and a team of
prosecutors have been working with the police to evaluate
the evidence.
"Crown Counsel have been kept informed throughout,
and have this week considered a report from the Procurator
Fiscal. Crown Counsel have today instructed that all nine
accused persons should be released on bail, while further
enquiries are carried out."
Proceedings remain active for the purposes of the
Contempt of Court Act.
The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service cannot
discuss the evidence, or what further steps will be taken
in the investigation
