Year of Highland Culture in 2007

10/03/2003

Scotland's Year of Highland Culture should see visitors flocking to the Highlands from home and abroad, the Convetion of the Highlands and Islands in Elgin was told today.

First Minister Jack McConnell gave his backing to the plans being developed for a year-long celebration in 2007 and announced that the Executive will help fund the project management team at Highland Council.

Mr McConnell said:

"This initiative is a great chance to showcase the very best of the Highlands unique and diverse cultural talents. In 2007 I want to see visitors from across Scotland and beyond flocking to take part in our national celebration.

"The proposals which will be taken forward by the taskforce will boost employment and tourism throughout the area and the Executive is strongly supportive of these ideas. That's why we will provide funding to help meet the costs of the project management team to ensure that Scotland's Year of Highland Culture does our country - and our culture - proud."

Deputy Tourism and Culture Minister Elaine Murray added:

"The taskforce has worked hard to develop these excellent proposals and should be congratulated. Driving forward a project like this requires vision, innovation and enterprise. I am sure their efforts will be rewarded.

"The Highlands and Islands have a great deal to celebrate and 2007 looks set to be a landmark year. The Scottish Executive is looking forward to being part of it."
