National Badminton Academy

A £3.5 million National Badminton Academy was opened today at Scotstoun Leisure Centre in Glasgow.

It has 10 full size courts and, as well as being available for public use, is the base and training ground for Scotland's national squad and coach.

Deputy Sports Minister Elaine Murray praised the partnership of sportscotland, the Scottish Institute of Sport and Glasgow City Council, who combined expertise and funding to create the new facilities.

Dr Murray said:

"Sport makes a significant contribution to many areas of Scottish life and to the Executive's objective is to expand that contribution, to make Scotland a geniune sporting nation.

"Our aims are to widen opportunities, to develop potential and to achieve excellence. The National Badminton Academy's facilities and services will cater for all, from the high performers to clubs and members of the community."

The National Badminton Academy It will be available for use by memebers of the public for recreational play.

2. The total cost of £3.5 million was met by sportscotland, Scottish Institute of Sport and Glasgow City Council.
