Blow your trumpet, schools told
05/03/2003
Further plans by the Executive to give more pupils
access to quality music tuition were outlined in new
guidance for education authorities and schools issued
today.
It highlights the benefits of music education and offers
advice on how to ensure children have the opportunity to
learn an instrument.
This follows the announcement last week that every
primary school pupil will have the opportunity to have at
least one year's free music tuition before they reach
primary six.
At a joint Heads of Instrumental Teachers Scotland
(HITS)/Scottish Executive music showcase in Glasgow, Deputy
Education Minister Nicol Stephen said:
"Music is a vital part of a rounded education. Every
child should have the opportunity to enjoy music and play
an instrument.
"Learning to play an instrument can do a tremendous
amount to motivate pupils. It helps boost their confidence
and can raise their attainment.
"An effective music department also makes a very
positive contribution to the overall ethos of a school. The
school concert or musical provides enjoyable opportunities
for pupils and teachers to share the results of their
efforts with parents and the wider community."
The guidance aims to:
- provide equal opportunity of access for all pupils
to learn to play a musical instrument
- enable pupils to realise their full musical
potential and develop a sense of personal achievement
and self expression
- involve pupils in a wide range of musical
experiences that contribute to the musical life of the
school and the community
- help pupils foster an understanding of music in the
everyday life of their own and other cultures.
