WEA centenary conference

28/02/2003

Scotland's future rests on its best asset - its people, the Workers' Educational Association Scotland conference, A Century of Learning, was told today.

Lifelong Learning Minister Iain Gray said:

"Our people are our number one asset and we have to ensure that they have the opportunity to be the very best that they can be.

"The WEA's efforts over the past 100 years mirror the Executive's current priority of creating a Smart Successful Scotland through an investment in learning and training for all Scots.

"The provision of learning opportunities for Scots is central to the Executive's Lifelong Learning Strategy, released earlier this month.

"The strategy emphises the importance of working even more closely with employers and community organisations to promote education opportunities and to help adults return to learning.

"I am therefore delighted to be speaking at today's conference, which is promoting these very values and I wish the WEA every success for the future."

The WEA was founded in 1903 in Oxford as a partnership between the worlds of the labour movements and the universities in order to open up learning to people in the community.
