Upgrade of CCTV systems

10/02/2003

A grant of £2.5 million for the modernisation of 23 successful CCTV projects was announced today.

The money will extend and upgrade existing CCTV systems and assist police forces to introduce Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology which supports them.

Justice Minister Jim Wallace said:

"This investment in CCTV equipment will further boost police in their efforts to combat serious crime, by improving the effectiveness of community safety projects. Where it has been deployed, this equipment has proved to be a powerful tool in crime prevention and its further development will greatly assist the police in their work.

"The benefits of CCTV are well-documented, but ANPR, or "smart cameras" as they are commonly known, are equally effective tools in increasing detection rates and building criminal intelligence. Together, they can target criminal behaviour more effectively and maximise public safety in local areas.

"The public have a right to feel safe in their community, which is why we are targeting specific areas, on the advice of the police, where the technology would offer the best results and secure value for money. The evidence shows that communities feel safer when cameras are installed. By improving the existing technology, we are improving the protection of our citizens."

In total the Executive has allocated £10.3 million to over 160 CCTV projects across Scotland since 1996, bringing over 2000 cameras online.

The extra funding will increase the Executive's direct investment in CCTV to £12.8 million since 1996.
