SMART award winners
27/01/2003
Scottish companies were today urged to take advantage
of grant schemes that can help them get their ideas out of
labs and into the marketplace.
Enterprise Minister Iain Gray was speaking as he
announced the latest tranche of SMART: SCOTLAND award
winners during a visit to Wolfson Microelectronics in
Edinburgh.
The SMART awards are designed to help new and existing
small businesses, with less than 50 employees, gain a
competitive edge in the market by funding the development
of innovative and commercially viable products and
processes.
Wolfson are previous SMART:SCOTLAND award winners and
have had substantial success from their Scottish base at a
time of great uncertainty in the global electronics
industry. As well as securing contracts with Microsoft and
Sanyo - the company have opened offices in the US, Japan
and Taiwan.
The Minister said:
"I am absolutely delighted to be able to announce the
latest tranche of SMART:SCOTLAND winners here at Wolfson.
They really do epitomise what can be achieved in terms of
turning ideas into market leading products. They are a
model for many other Scottish companies to follow.
"The Executive is committed to helping grow the economy
by investing in the skills of our workforce and getting
Scottish ideas and innovations out of our laboratories and
into global markets.
"The days of having an economy based on low wage - low
skilled jobs are over. If we are to get Scotland growing
again then we have to make sure that we offer as much
support as we can to companies at the cutting edge of the
technologies that will shape the world in the 21
st Century.
"That is why we are investing £450m in our new
Intermediary Technology Institutes and that is why we will
continue to support the SMART:SCOTLAND scheme.
"We can deliver a
Smart, Successful Scotland. Companies such as
Wolfson and the winners I am announcing today are proof of
what we can achieve. I hope that other Scottish firms and
entrepreneurs follow their lead."
