"This is excellent news for these projects in Port Glasgow and Clydebankthe Clyde Urban Waterfront area, particulary Clydebank area. There is no doubt that both townsthe area have has faced real challenges in recent years, but I am sure these projects will begin to address some of those challenges.

"The Clyde Urban Regeneration Zone - which is backed by £8 million of European funding through Urban II - aims to tackle social exclusion and help close the opportunity gap many people still face. These projects clearly fit the bill.

"The aims of the programme also tie in with the aims of the Scottish Executive - to build a better Scotland where everyone, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to fulfil their potential. We were pleased to play a part in taking this initiative forward, but, crucially, the programme was based on consultation, has local support and will involve local partners in implementation."

URBAN II is one of four Community Initiatives. These account for about five per cent of the Structural Funds budget. The European Commission allocated 11 programmes to the UK. The Urban II programme is worth £18 million in total with around £8 million in Structural Funds support.
