Launch of Traveline website
16/12/2002
Traveline Scotland's website was officially launched
today, providing comprehensive information about bus,
coach, rail, ferry and internal air services.
Deputy Transport Minister Lewis Macdonald said it will
offer more and more people in Scotland and beyond online
access to plan journeys on public transport network.
The website will operate alongside the Traveline
telephone service -
0870 608 2608 - for travellers seeking
timetable information for all public transport services
across Scotland.
Mr Macdonald, speaking at Traveline's call centre in
Airdrie, said:
"I am delighted to launch Traveline's website today - it
is an important part of our plans to attract more and more
people to public transport.
"We want to improve access opening up people's ability
to travel, as well as making it a real and viable
alternative to using our cars.
"This enhancement to the Traveline Scotland service will
provide a one-stop shop for passengers. It will ensure
people can quickly access quality, consistent information
wherever they live and be able to take advantage of the
varied information available to plan visits across the
country if they wish to use more than one type of
transport.
"I am also delighted to be able to announce that
Strathclyde Passenger Transport (SPT) have joined Traveline
Scotland, and will work together in partnership with other
local authorities and transport operators, bringing their
much valued expertise and experience to Traveline.
"We are investing to deliver modern, reliable,
integrated and accessible public transport. Our Transport
Delivery Report committed us to providing this kind of
service and the recent Scottish Budget has provided a huge
funding increase in public transport of 70%, bringing
spending to £705 million by 2006.
Traveline's telephone service began operation in January
2001. It currently handles about 6,000 enquires a week.
The Executive has committed £1.7 million in grant
assistance to the service for capital and set up costs.
Transport operators have also contributed £500,000 to
operational costs.
