Fish farm production 2001

Details of the production of farmed salmon, trout and
other fish species in Scotland last year are provided in
Scottish Fish Farms: Annual Production Survey 2001,
published today by Fisheries Research Services.
Key statistics provided by the Executive Agency include
:
- production of salmon in 2001 rose 7.4 per cent from
128,959 tonnes to 138,519 tonnes.
- production of salmon for 2002 is forecast at
159,060 tonnes. This projection is based on improved
survival rates achieved by the industry and the number
of ova laid down to hatch in 2001.
- production of rainbow trout has also increased from
5,154 tonnes to 5,466.
- new farmed species are now being produced in small
commercial quantities - in 2001, 105 tonnes of brown
trout/sea trout, 15 tonnes of cod, 80 tonnes of
halibut, and 3.75 tonnes of arctic char were produced,
with steady increases forecast for 2002.
- employment across all sectors fell by approximately
seven per cent and now stands at 1,941 while
productivity has increased from 92 tonnes per person to
110 tonnes per person.
