New funding for fridge disposal

An additional £3.3 million to help Scotland's local authorities develop safe ways to dispose of more than 220,000 fridges discarded in Scotland every year, was announced today .

-The new money will assist local authorities with the costs arising from new regulations on the disposal of fridges, freezers and other domestic appliances containing ozone depleting Chloro Fluoro Carbons (CFCs).

Making the announcement, Environment and Rural Development Minister Ross Finnie said:

"The Scottish Executive is committed to making Scotland cleaner, greener and safer. Ozone depleting substances within fridges and freezers pose significant threats to our environment. It is critical, therefore, that obsolete appliances are disposed of safely.

"Safe disposal of items containing CFCs is a global problem. The Scottish Executive is working in partnership to meet its obligations under European environmental regulations.

"The money we are announcing today is additional to £1.69 million announced in March. With a commitment of almost £5 million by the end of this year, the Scottish Executive is ensuring that local authorities are able to deliver services offering safe disposal.

"This additional money will go a long way to help Scotland meet its responsibilities and protect our environment. "
