22/11/2002

Dundee City Council has produced a special video aimed at helping children lead more active lives.

Funded and produced as part of the Active Primary School programme, it is designed as a training tool for teachers and parents and encouragement for children to adopt more healthy lifestyles.

Sport Minister Mike Watson said:

"I congratulate Dundee City Council on this innovative project. The video is an excellent example of the kind of joined-up approach needed to tackle obesity and inactivity in our children.

"The Scottish Executive has increased funding for the Active Primary School programme from £1.3m per annum to a total of £16m over the next three years. This underlines our commitment to promoting physical activity as an essential element in improving the health of the nation."

The Active Primary School Programme is currently operating in 21 local authority areas covering around 250 primary schools. sportscotland runs the programme on behalf of the Executive and covers issues such as children's play and active travel to school as well as sport.

The programme also benefits the health and education of Scotland's young people as well as introducing them to physical activity.

3. The Active Primary School Programme run by sportscotland has recently benefited from the 2002 Scottish Budget announcement of additional funding of £700,000 in 2003-2004, £4.7 million in 2004-04 and £6.7 million in 2005-06.
