01/11/2002

A new university course to assist with sustainability in healthcare, and the winners of this year's NHS Environmental Awards were announced today.

The MSc in Healthcare Property and Facilities Management, which will be run by Glasgow Caledonian University, was formally launched by Deputy Health Minister Mary Mulligan at the Scottish Healthcare Conference, Exhibition and Environment Awards in Cumbernauld.

The new course, which was developed by the Forum, along with the School of Built and Natural Environment at the University, will be delivered through web-based distance learning.

The Minister was attending to deliver her keynote speech to the conference which has the theme 'Delivering the 'Healthy Plan' in a Sustainable Way'.

Mrs Mulligan said:

"I am pleased to formally launch a new MSc in Healthcare Property and Facilities Management. This is an exciting venture and I am sure it will benefit the students, your profession and NHSScotland.

"The increased recognition by the Scottish Executive of the crucial importance of sustainability in all our policies gives great cause for optimism. By placing sustainability at the heart of all that we do, we in Scotland aim to be much more efficient in how we use resources and to reduce the amount of waste we generate.

"I would like to congratulate today's award winners for their excellent achievements and the way in which they have taken a more environmentally conscientious view of how to go about their work. I was particularly heartened to see the good work of students recognised at this ceremony.

"I would like to congratulate the Forum on its outstanding work on environmental matters. It has made significant steps forward in enabling NHS bodies to effectively manage their property assets - it is important that we have an effective environmental management policy in place to ensure we can continually improve our environmental performance."

The Minister also presented this year's NHS Environment Awards. Healthcare workers across the country were recognised for their good work in sustainability within the NHS.
