First Minister launches 2002 Poppy Appeal

30/10/2002

First Minister Jack McConnell today formally set in motion the Royal British Legion's 2002 Scottish Poppy Appeal.

At the Stone of Remembrance outside Edinburgh City Chambers, he presented one of the first poppies to Malcolm Douglas, a veteran of the 1942 Battle of El Alamein in North Africa.

Mr McConnell said:

"I am backing the Scottish Poppy Appeal because it provides real support to ex-service personnel and their relatives. They give advice on pension claims, run a care home and employ ex-service people in the poppy factory. I would encourage everyone in Scotland to wear a poppy this year."
