Remembrance Sunday 2002

15/10/2002

The Queen has decided that November 10 shall be observed as Remembrance Sunday. The customary Two Minutes' silence will be observed at 11:00am.

The Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, the Right Reverend Doctor Finlay AJ Macdonald, has issued the following message.

"In each Remembrance-tide, the country brings together its memories and respect, sadness for wars past and hope for future peace. In vividly symbolic acts of gathering together and keeping silence, the nation in its diversity honours courage, sacrifice and duty. These are gestures that draw together the religious and the secular, the old and the young, those with personal memories of war-time and those who must rely on the memories of others.

"In some years there is an added poignancy, when the country is acutely aware of international tensions and worried by uncertainties ahead. Then, Remembrance Sunday has a different edge, a special fervour; it is not only an acknowledgement of the painful moments of history, but also a moment for reflection on the present and the future.

"This time is a gift for all those burdened by the pain of conflict: those seeking healing of a bereavement that seemed pointless, those facing difficult duties in the service of their country, and those struggling to find the path of peace and justice for others."
