Energy efficiency promoted as ideal practice
11/10/2002
Energy efficiency, as part of the Executive's 'Do a
Little, Change a Lot' campaign, is being promoted to
visitors at the Ideal Home Show in Glasgow this weekend and
next week.
Environment Minister Ross Finnie said:
"With real benefits for the householder and the
environment it is important that we show people that it is
easy to 'do a little and change a lot' and help to protect
Scotland's environment.
The stand at the Ideal Home Show Scotland is an
excellent way of communicating the importance of energy
efficiency in the home.
"This partnership between ScottishPower and the
Executive brings energy efficiency to life in a simple,
accessible way. Staff from Scotland's network of Energy
Efficiency Advice Centres will be at the stand so visitors
can be assured of expert advice."
The Ideal Home Show Scotland at the SECC, Glasgow will
run from Friday October 11 - Sunday October 20.
The energy efficiency stand at the show explains how
saving energy in the home is an easy step towards reducing
greenhouse gas emissions and helping tackle climate change.
Around 45% of Scotland's energy currently comes from
burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas.
Visitors to the energy efficiency stand can find out
about issues such as energy-saving lightbulbs, central
heating temperatures, hot water tanks and complete free,
detailed energy efficiency surveys for their home, with
assistance from trained energy advisors.
Some energy efficiency measures:
- Use energy saving bulbs - save up to £10 per year
per bulb
- Turn down heating by 1° C - save around £30 per
year
- Fit a hot water jacket - save around £15 per
year
- Switch off tv, not just leave on standby - save
around £50 per year
(all figures supplied by Energy Saving Trust,

The energy efficiency stand coincides with, and supports
National Energy Efficiency Week (October 14-20) which
features a number of national and regional campaigns and
events designed to publicise measures to reduce energy
waste.
