Crown Office invites ideas for policy review
08/10/2002
The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service held its
first consultation seminar on policy issues yesterday in
Edinburgh.
The seminar focused on a number of key policy areas
including:
- racist crime
- interpreting and translation
- children as victims and witnesses
- other victims and witnesses
- domestic abuse
The consultation was intended to encourage
representatives from Scotland's communities and voluntary
organisations to give their views on arising issues and to
contribute directly to policy review.
Welcoming participants to the event Solicitor General
Elish Angiolini QC said:
"We view this event as a great opportunity, and a
significant step towards establishing a culture that
embraces consultation and the sharing of ideas and
experiences. This will help us to ensure our policies are
developed with a knowledge of their impact on
communities."
The seminar, which was developed in close co-operation
with the Scottish Court Service, included short
presentations on key policy areas, followed by discussion
sessions, in which participants were encouraged to offer
comments and suggestions.
The event was welcomed by attendees, including Selma
Rahman, a representative of the organisation Children in
Scotland, who said:
"The issue of children and young people interacting with
the criminal justice system is imperative, and we welcome
this opportunity to consult with the Crown Office."
Representatives from approximately 80 organisations were
invited to the event, including racial equality councils
and the Commission for Racial Equality.
