M74 public exhibitions
20/09/2002
Three public exhibitions displaying the latest proposals
for completion of the M74 motorway were opened today.
Welcoming the exhiibitions, Deputy Minister for
Enterprise, Transport and Lifelong Learning Lewis Macdonald
said:
"I want everyone affected by the scheme or with an
interest in it to be fully aware of how the proposals for
the road are developing. The exhibitions running next week
in Glasgow and Rutherglen provide an early opportunity for
people to see how the road proposals are developing, before
they are finalised.
"For the first time for a major road scheme of this
sort, a virtual reality model will be available. This will
give people a much more realistic idea of how the new road
will look once completed and how it will fit into the
surrounding environment.
"Two information leaflets will also be available. One
explains the developing road proposals in more detail. The
other outlines the statutory process which starts next
Spring to take the scheme forward. I hope that as many
people as possible will visit the exhibitions next
week."
The exhibitions will be held daily from 10.30am to 7pm
from Monday 23 to Thursday 26 September at Govanhill
Library, the Tramway Theatre, and the Royal Burgh House,
Rutherglen. The exhibitions will feature display boards
showing the proposed line of the new road from Fullarton
Road to the West of Kingston, together with landscaping
proposals and mitigation measures for dealing with
contaminated land.
The M74 Completion project is being taken forward in
partnership between the Scottish Executive and Glasgow
City, South Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire Councils. The
proposed route is a development of the line announced by
Ministers and the 3 Councils in January 2001. Following the
public exhibitions the proposed line of the road will be
confirmed with the publication of draft road and compulsory
purchase orders in Spring 2003.
The exhibitions will also present the consultant's
recommendations for the M74 Corridor from The Central
Scotland Transport Corridor Studies.
The virtual reality model and brochures will also be
available on the M74 website at
