Minister re-opens Bunree holiday site

30/07/2002

Dr Elaine Murray today officially re-opened the Caravan Club Golden Jubilee Site at Bunree following a £320,000 upgrade.

The site, which has enjoyed a total one million pound investment since the 1980s, has been fitted out with new toilet and shower blocks, baby and toddler rooms, a games room and improved laundry facilities.

Bunree has pitches for 99 caravans and is one of the club's most popular sites enjoying a 90 per cent occupancy rate during the summer months and a 73 per cent average throughout the year. The year-round popularity of the site ensures that local traders benefit from an approximate one million pounds in visitor spend.

Dr Murray, Deputy Minister for Tourism, Culture and Sport said:

"Raising the standard of facilitites available for tourist is of paramount importance to the industry today and we must all offer our visitors both quality and value for money.

"This iste is a great example of tourism being a valuable and welcome part of the local community. The improvements were carried out by local contractors and the visitors the site attracts will help support local businesses, shops, restaurants and attractions.

"All these points demonstrate that tourism is everyone's business."

Bunree is one of more than 200 top-quality Caravan Club sites in the UK, 31 of which are in Scotland. Each year Club members spend over £18 million in Scotland on local purchases. Over the last five years The Caravan Club has invested over £33 million on improvements to its UK Site network, the majority of which is spent with local building contractors, landscapers and local tradesmen.

This latest £320,000 contract included upgrading of many of the Site's facilities, taking into account suggestions made by members and the British Holiday Parks grading scheme. A total expenditure of £1 million has been invested at Bunree to achieve its current standards.

The site has been selected to be one of the three Caravan Club Golden Jubilee sites. The others are: Pembrey Country Park in Wales, which was re-opened and renamed on 24 July by Andrew Davies AM, and Abbey Wood near Greenwich, which is to be re-opened and renamed by the Club Patron HRH The Duke of Edinburgh on 5 November.
