First rise in adoption applications since 1998
13/06/2002
The number of adoption order applications in Scotland
rose last year for the first time since 1998.
Statistics for 2001 show that applications for adoption
orders rose 3% from 2000 - from 405 to 418 - and the number
granted rose 4% from 399 to 414.
Minister for Education and Young People Cathy Jamieson
said:
"I welcome these figures which show that more children
have been given the opportunity for secure family life that
adoption can provide. I hope it will encourage more
prospective adopters to come forward.
"Our review of adoption policy has examined how to
modernise the system in Scotland to attract more adopters
and to provide permanent, stable homes for children in
care.
"I will be making an announcement about the first phase
of the review within the next few weeks."
