Aquaculture Strategy Group Appointed

10/06/2002

Developing an aquaculture strategy for Scotland is a challenging and vital task needing hard work and a constructive approach, it was said today.

This was the message from Deputy Minister for Environment and Rural Development Allan Wilson, speaking after announcing the members of the Ministerial Working Group on Aquaculture - which will develop the strategic framework for the industry and which meets for the first time today.

Mr Wilson said:

"Developing an aquaculture strategy for Scotland is a challenging and vital task. The team I have put together includes leading figures from a wide range of stakeholders, from the industry to the WWF, and from the retailers to the Scottish Parliament.

"The Working Group members will bring many diverse and valuable perspectives about what needs to be done to put aquaculture on a sustainable footing. Success will ultimately depend on the same constructive approach that I have seen so far, with some give and take on all sides, and a lot of hard work.

"I am confident that everyone will feel able to look beyond the confines of their own interest, to create a framework that will be of benefit to our country as a whole. I look forward to working together with the Working Group team, to produce a vision for the future of Scottish aquaculture."
