£4 million improvement plan for A90
06/06/2002
Road safety and environmental improvements on the A90
were boosted today by the announcement of a £4 million
improvement project on the Forfar Bypass between Aberdeen
and Dundee.
Deputy Minister for Enterprise, Transport and Lifelong
Learning Lewis Macdonald announced the new money as he
viewed the progress at the £4.7 million Inchture
Interchange.
The improvements at Glamis and Kirriemuir will encompass
the construction of two grade separated junctions. The
building of an underpass at Glamis and an overbridge at
Kirriemuir will be supplemented with improved sliproads,
and links to the local road network.
Both projects will include environmental protection
measures to prevent road drainage entering the water course
at Inchture and allow mammal crossing at the Glamis -
Kirriemuir project.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony Lewis Macdonald
said:
"The new junctions will make a significant difference to
road safety on these sections of A90 where the record of
fatal and serious accidents has been poor.
"This is good news for drivers who use the Aberdeen to
Perth route, and it will allow them to leave, join and
cross safely.
"Our aim is to deliver an efficient, safe transport
system which meets the needs of everyone without
threatening our environment."
Since the creation of the Scottish Executive, 15 major
schemes have either been completed, or are under
development, or have funds firmly committed.
The improvement at Inchture Interchange will be built by
Balfour Beatty Construction Limited. Perth and Kinross
Council will supervise the works, acting as agents for
Scottish Ministers.
The improvement at Glamis - Kirriemuir will be built by
RJ McLeod (Contractors) Limited. Angus Council will
supervise the works, acting as agents for Scottish
Ministers.
Two lanes of traffic will be available at most times.
During construction of the overbridges the carriageway may
be restricted to one traffic lane. Overnight traffic is
expected to be reduced to one traffic lane in both
directions during critical activities.
A speed restriction of 40 mph will be in force on the
affected parts of the A90 throughout the construction
period.
Traffic conditions will be monitored and media bulletins
will be issued as necessary. Drivers are encouraged to make
use of travel information lines and to listen to local and
national radio reports.
The duration of the Inchture and Glamis - Kirriemuir
works will be 36 weeks and 45 weeks respectively.
