June farm census forms issued

28/05/2002

June 2002 Agricultural Census forms will be issued to farmers shortly, it was announced today.

Census results directly influence Executive policy by providing key statistics to assess the health of the farming economy.

Regular contact with farmers is vital as it keeps the Executive's Environment and Rural Affairs Department register up-to-date, and ensures that information on new animal health requirements and subsidy schemes can be directed quickly to relevant farmers.

Farms affected by Foot and Mouth disease - who were excluded from the census last year - will rejoin this year.

With a few exceptions the very smallest agricultural units - described as minor holdings - are included in the census on a three yearly rota, so most of those who responded in 2000 and 2001 will not receive a return.

Census forms must be completed and returned to the Scottish Executive Environment and Rural Affairs Department no later than June 15th, 2002.
