Councils get £148m for housing

26/03/2002

Nearly £148 million has been allocated Scotland's councils for capital investment in their own housing.

The funding for 2002-03 is the same as for the current year except for Glasgow City Council, Shetland, Dumfries & Galloway and Scottish Borders. These 4 councils are receiving partial allocations, since they are on a path which may lead to transfer of their housing stock during 2002-03. Supplementary allocations may be made to these councils depending on actual stock transfer dates.

This investment supplements investment in Scotland's housing through New Housing Partnerships and Communities Scotland's Development Programme.

Housing Revenue Account capital allocations provide consent for Councils to borrow for capital investment in their own housing stock. In addition to borrowing consent Councils can also invest revenue surpluses and a proportion of receipts from council house sales. At 30 September 2001, the number of council houses in Scotland was estimated to be around 533,203.
