Commitment to sustainable future - Minister

26/03/2002

The Executive is committed to working with agriculture and environmental interests to enhance our rural environment in a sustainable way that benefits everyone, the Scottish Agricultural College/ Scottish Environment Protection Agency Conference was told today.

Addressing the conference, the Minister for Environment and Rural development Ross Finnie said:

"The Forward Strategy for Scottish Agriculture recognised the environmental challenges facing the agricultural industry now and in the future. At this crucial time for farming it is important that farmers - indeed everyone with an interest in the agriculture industry - should be forward looking and adaptable, and responsive to new ways of tackling old problems.

"It is imperative that interested parties work in partnership to secure a future for a farming industry that strives to achieve high environmental standards."

The Conference organised by the Scottish Agricultural College and the Scottish Environment Protection Agency.

Conference is aimed at key players in the development and application of strategic policies in the field.

Speakers come from a wide background-ranging from Farming Practitioners, Scientists and Public Administrators.

Waste from agricultural sources can be a cause of concern, the conference will look at tackling diffuse pollution sources, waste from agricultural activities, organic waste applications to land and gaseous emissions. The conference will look at the issues and look to identify better practices.

Those attending the conference will have an important part to play in contributing to the forward thinking on Agri-environmental issues outlined in the Forward Strategy for Scottish Agriculture published last year.
