Deer commission chairman re-appointed

Mr Andrew Raven has been re-appointed as Chairman of the Deer Commission for Scotland for a further 3 year period from 1 January 2002 to 31 December 2004.

Ross Finnie, Minister for Environment and Rural Development said:

"I was very pleased last month to launch the first Long Term Strategy for wild deer in Scotland. Andrew Raven was instrumental in driving forward the work of the Deer Commission, which lead to the publication of this milestone document.

"Deer and their management form an integral part of sustainable land management, and I am delighted that Andrew has agreed to serve a further 3 years to progress the implementation of the Strategy."

Under the Deer (Scotland) Act 1996 the remit of the Deer Commission for Scotland is to further the conservation, control and sustainable management of deer in Scotland and to keep under review all matters, including the welfare of deer.

The appointment of Mr Raven was made in accordance with the guidance issued by the Office of the commissioner of Public Appointments. The post will be part-time and Mr Raven will be paid £22,565 per annum.

Andrew Raven's background is estate management and hill farming. He trained as a rural practice Chartered Surveyor and was previously Director of Land Management of the John Muir Trust. He is Chairman of the Governing Body of the Macaulay Land Use Research Institute, receiving £5000 per annum and a Forestry Commissioner, receiving £8233 per annum. He served on the Steering Group advising on the development of the Scottish Agricultural Strategy and is a Trustee of the Millennium Forest for Scotland. He has not been involved in any political activity in the last five years.
